Had an agent that came in today with an interesting problem. Last night he received the following message. “Windows PROGRAM NAME is not working” and “You may be the Victim of Software Counterfeiting”. Once he rebooted windows visita presented a message that he needed to reinstall windows and would not let him into windows. The message was “Windows must be reinstalled to activate”. Here is how I fixed it.

On the error message was a link to the help section. Once in the help I was able to find a link to help on the internet. This launched Internet Explorer. From there I did the following:

2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

3) Find the file CMD.exe

4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select ‘Run as Administrator’

5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

 Type: cd %windir%\system32

9) Type net start slsvc

10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

Then I rebooted and was presented with the Windows Activation. I activated windows and all was solved. Hope this helps someone.
